True Cowardice

Two days ago we posted about the incident in Crawford wherein a man in a pick-up truck, in the early hours of the morning, ran over white wooden crosses placed by anti-war protestors in memory of the troops who have died in Iraq. That’s all the crosses were, a memorial to men who gave the ultimate sacrifice to their country. Yet, that MSM liberal media we hear so much about hasn’t covered this. The uber-Patriotic Fox News isn’t covering this, I guess no one cares. Paul Begala, wrote a strong response to the villain who did this.

I don’t think they taught Larry Chad to desecrate crosses at the Columbus Avenue Baptist Church. And I doubt his Army buddies from Vietnam are proud to see him running over American flags and disrespecting a memorial for the war dead.

So what could drive a true-blue – or should I say Bush red? – American patriot to commit such a heinous act

Such is the hatred of the far right at the dawn of the 21st Century. And my how the optical worm has turned. Today it is the left invoking faith, flag and family, while the right destroys crosses. Today it is the left that honors the war dead, raises up a Gold Star Mother and publicly prays for our troops, while the right viciously attacks a woman who gave her country everything. Today it is the left that patiently and peacefully respects the Office of the Presidency, while the right diminishes the office by claiming it’s more important for the President to go bike-riding with a sports hero than comfort the mother of a war hero.

That’ll Show ‘Em

Jethro: Hey you know what will really show those stupid libruls in Crawford?
Cleetus: What’s that?
Jethro: If we get in my Ford and run over them white crosses they put in memory of troops that died.
Cleetus: Yeah, that’ll teach those anti-American assholes…

No, this isn’t senseless badgering, this actually happened.

CRAWFORD, Texas (AP) – A pickup truck tore through rows of white crosses last night near President Bush’s ranch, where a woman has been protesting the Iraq war.

The crosses stretched along the road at the Crawford, Texas, camp, bore the names of fallen U-S soldiers. No one was hurt.

Yes, there’s no better way to say we support the troops then to run over crosses standing in memoriam. But don’t worry they’re the true Americans right?

Hurting the Rest of Us

The NARAL advertisement is being pulled, as various news services began reporting this evening. I think that it’s our responsibility as two democrats concerned with our party’s future and finding true solutions to problems, to call a spade a spade. I imagine that Zac would agree with me here, but if not I’m sure he’ll post clarifying his position.

What NARAL did is simply the lowest common denominator of political dirty tricks. It deserves to be placed in the Hall of Shame, with the smearing of Max Cleland, Hackett, and McCain in the 2000 GOP Primary.

The Annenberg Factcheck.Org put out a scathing analysis of the advertisement. The NARAL ad makes dangerous implications, the most despicable being that Roberts has made legal arguments to support the criminal acts of domestic terrorism against abortion clinics. This simply isn’t true. As Factcheck points out:

To the contrary, during the Reagan administration when he was Associate Counsel to the President, Roberts drafted a memo saying abortion-clinic bombers “should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.” In the 1986 memo, Roberts called abortion bombers “criminals” and “misguided individuals,” indicating that they would get no special treatment regarding requests for presidential pardons. Reagan in fact gave no pardons to abortion-clinic bombers.

Factcheck continues to list the accusations and inferences made by NARAL and show them to simply be false. The fact is, their attacks are dishonest, and in cases where they are close to the truth purposely mislead. In those examples he’s not supporting one side or the other, but merely making the legal argument; for example in one instance that a law regarding discrimination could not be used in a case where protestors were blockading abortion clinics. Roberts says that the anti-discrimination statute is the wrong one to pursue because they were blocking both men and women, and agreed that it was obviously trespassing, which was criminalized specifically to abortion clinics years later by Congress.

The simple fact is the actions taken by NARAL hurt themselves, other abortion rights groups and supporters, the Democratic Party, and any ally they have. If they have objections to Judge Roberts, and they do, make them on facts and through the appropriate venues. Simply retracting the ad isn’t enough, and as shocking as this may sound coming from a Democrat, I’d go so far as to say NARAL owes an apology to Judge Roberts for distorting the record in what amounts to nothing more than a textbook example of a smear. While they’re at it, they should probably apologize to those of us who believe in abortion rights.

The truth is NARAL did this to drum their own supporters up, and it’s back firing right in their faces, and while it’s a cause I support, it’s an organization whose actions I do not. And that’s what you can expect from TwoDems.Com, a spade is a spade whether they’re dressed in red or blue.
